An English language teacher from Novi Sad, Serbia – who helped improve students’ English language skills by using their mobile phones – has won a Cambridge competition.

Jelena Perišić – who teaches at Rainbow School of English in Novi Sad has been announced as one of the winners of the Cambridge English Language Assessment / Bell Teacher Competition 2013.

Picked from over 1,000 entries, Jelena impressed judges with a short essay on how she successfully used technology to help prepare students for the speaking test of Cambridge English: First. Her award winning idea involved asking students to choose and discuss images on a chosen theme from their mobile phone galleries. Jelena practised the picture comparison task in the speaking test by getting learners to choose photos from their mobile phone galleries. Using their own photos really motivated the learners, and shows how simple, widely available technology can be used effectively in the classroom.

Tim Banks, Global Manager – Teacher Development at Cambridge English Language Assessment – said: “Jelena’s idea really stood out from the crowd. She showed how technology can be used to support exam preparation. Cambridge English is delighted to support this kind of innovation which can have a real, positive impact on students and make a huge contribution to English language teaching.”

Tony Anderson, Bell’s Director of Sales and Marketing, commented: “The whole Cambridge learning environment is about innovation and Jelena’s project reflects our educational ethos. Bell’s teacher development courses champion the use of technology to engage students.”

Jelena will join two other winners from Brazil and China in Cambridge to take part in a teacher training course at Bell in July 2013.
