Webinar 26/2: Are We Speaking or Are We Writing? Grammar and Formality

This final webinar looks at the overlaps and continuities between spoken and written grammars with a particular focus on being more formal and being more informal in different contexts and for different purposes.   We’ll look at topics that enable us to be more or less formal and informal such as noun phrases and pronouns, conjunctions and discourse markers and we will also look at Cambridge English corpus examples of e-communication using emails, texts, blogs, twitter etc in which spoken forms regularly appear in written texts. Some implications of such forms of English for English language teaching will also be discussed.

Geraldine Mark has over 25 years of experience in teaching, publishing and writing for ELT. She is co-author ofEnglish Grammar Today, English Vocabulary in Use upper intermediate CD ROM, a contributor to Touchstone, and editor of Cambridge University Press titles including many of the In Use series, From Corpus to Classroom,Exploring Spoken English, the Cambridge Grammar of English. Along with Anne O’Keeffe, she is currently researching and writing the grammar reference level descriptors for the English Profile project.

Ronald Carter is Research Professor of Modern English Language in the School of English Studies, University of Nottingham. Professor Carter has published extensively in the fields of applied linguistics and literature and language in education and is the author, co-author and editor of over 50 books and one hundred articles in these fields. He is chair of the Education and ELT Syndics Publishing Committee for Cambridge University Press and a member of the Operating Board of the Press.  Recent publications as author and co-author include: From Corpus to Classroom(CUP (with Anne O’Keeffe and Michael McCarthy), the award-winning Cambridge Grammar of English (CUP) (with Michael McCarthy) and, most recently, an A-Z grammar and workbook for B1- B2 intermediate students English Grammar Today: An A-Z of spoken and written grammar (CUP, 2011) (with Anne O’Keeffe, Geraldine Mark and Michael McCarthy).

Series Summary:

Grammar is still commonly associated with the written language and, mainly, with reading and writing.  This is a short series of webinars with a focus on the grammar of spoken language. The overall aim of this series of FOUR webinars is a very practical one of helping teachers to help their learners to develop greater fluency in using the spoken language. The webinars look at what a learner can learn to do with some key patterns of grammar that are most commonly used in speaking. They aim to make teachers aware of these features and suggest ways of incorporating them into their teaching. Examples presented are typical of those appropriate to B1-C1 levels and Cambridge FCE spoken English exams but the webinars are relevant to teachers of learners of English at all levels.

All the webinars will draw on the latest Cambridge English corpus research into spoken grammar, including the recent Cambridge Limerick and Shannon (CLAS) spoken corpus and the Cambridge and Nottingham e-Language (CANELC) corpus, together with examples from the Cambridge Learner corpus of what learners from across the world can do with spoken English.
