Theoretical Lyceum D.Cantemir in Bălți, Moldova has been announced as runner up in the Cambridge English Centenary Competition 2013, organised by Cambridge English Language Assessment. Nearly 300 schools took part in the Competition, from 70 countries and five continents. The school was awarded with school equipment for impressing a panel of expert judges from Cambridge.

To enter the competition, schools worked on one of ten classroom projects designed to engage and motivate English language students. Theoretical Lyceum D. Cantemir chose ‘How English will improve my future – English is the key to success’ as its project, with the programme of activities run by the School’s FLASH Club – Foreign Language Association of Students of High School. Activities included group discussions, publishing newspapers, giving presentations, and even shooting a short film in which former Lyceum graduates explained why English had been so important to their career success. Students and teachers all found the project challenging and inspiring; as one student said: ‘The project was really marvellous. It was a great opportunity for us students to get together and show the real level of our knowledge of English and even improve it.’

Dionysia Ioannou, Head of Marketing for Cambridge English Language Assessment Southern Europe, said:

‘At Cambridge English we are committed to helping people to learn English more effectively and we find that students who make English part of their daily lives find it much easier to master the language. This was the main driving force behind the competition. It is these kind of creative classroom projects that have a huge impact on student motivation which plays a key role in raising language standards.’

The Competition was one of many activities held to celebrate 100 years of Cambridge English Language Assessment, provider of the world’s leading range of qualifications for learners and teachers of English. Cambridge English exams have been administered in Moldova since 2013 through our authorised exam centre, Alliance Française de Moldavie .
