A two-year collaboration between Cambridge English Language Assessment and the Education Ministry of Malta was announced by the Office of Prime Minister Joseph Muscat on Friday 27 May 2015. The collaboration will help improve the learning, teaching and assessment of English language in Malta.

The collaboration will involve a benchmarking exercise to investigate how the English language skills of Maltese pupils compare to international standards and the consolidation and improvement of the English Language teaching and assessment skills of Maltese teachers as part of the Ministry’s programme of Continuous Professional Development for teachers.

Dr Hanan Khalifa, Head of Research and International Development, is working with the Ministry for Education as a member of the project board. She commented ”The level of English in Malta is already high in comparison to other European countries, and we’re very excited by the opportunity to help teachers and pupils to achieve even higher standards.”

To celebrate the collaboration the ‘Cambridge English Spelling Competition: Malta 2015’ was held at St Ignatius Middle School, Tal-Handaq. Over 250 students from the school, aged 11–12 years old, took part in the competition. 16 winners were presented with certificates by Minister for Education Mr Evarist Bartolo.
