Shopping game is bags of fun

leave a comment »

We have now launched “Shop and Drop”, a new online game that creates a virtual shopping environment aimed at 5–12 year olds. Experts at Cambridge English, who developed the game, say that growing research has been driving force behind Shop and Drop.

‘Research such as 2012’s European Survey of Language Competences, which tested more than 50,000 children, showed that children learn English best when they are encouraged to integrate it into their everyday lives. This has been the key driving force behind the development of Shop and Drop. More and more parents all over the world are recognising how learning English gives children a big advantage in life. We chose the theme of shopping as it’s something that children all over the world can relate to and most importantly we’ve made the game fun which is key to increasing motivation.’

Players can improve their sentence structure by progressing through 15 levels that create a virtual shopping environment. Words found in the game are based on the Cambridge English: Young Learners exam. The difficulty levels reflect the Starters, Movers and Flyers found in Cambridge English: Young Learners – and the game gets more difficult as players progress through the levels.

The first level is open access and, by signing up to receive more free child-friendly activities, parents can unlock higher levels for their children to progress through. Children can also join a global leader board to see how their score compares to other children around the world.

Parents now have the chance to subscribe to a special parents’ newsletter, which includes links to learning activities. Parents can sign up to receive regular tips, advice and learning activities to help them get involved in their children’s learning.

Tip for Parents: Learning through online games

leave a comment »

Lots of young people love playing online games, and there are a lot of good games that can help people learn English. Here are our free learning games, and young learners can also try these games and activities.

Before your child starts playing, say that they will need to tell you some words they learn in the game. This will help your child remember what they have learned. With more than one child, you could have a competition – the person who can remember the most words in the game is the winner. You may want to play the game yourself before your child, so that you can be ready to help your child with anything they find difficult. Or you might enjoy playing the game together and helping each other!

Tip for Parents: Using online video

leave a comment »

Online videos can be a great way to practise listening and learn new words. To help your child practise English or prepare for a Cambridge English exam, go to our YouTube channel.

Here’s a simple way you can help your child to learn with online video clips. First, choose a short video. Look at the title of the video. Either in English or your language, talk about what you think you will see and hear in the video, or try to guess some of the English words you might hear. Then watch the clip, and check if you were right.

Tip for parents: Text message talk

leave a comment »

If you and your child both have mobile phones, choose a time for communicating with each other – not by speaking but by writing text messages in English. You could be in different places, or you could be in the same house or room. The most important rule is that you are not allowed to talk to each other, so the focus is on practising writing in English.

You could let your child choose what to write about or you could decide on a topic before you start the game – plans for the weekend, for example. This should be a fun way to practise writing.

As an alternative to mobile phones, you can write messages to each other on a piece of paper instead.
